Armenian films and film directors

Hamo Beknazaryan was the founder of Armenian film shooting. He was born in 1891 in Yerevan but he worked and created in Tbilisi. He shot the first Armenian soundless films ‘’Namus’’ and ‘’Zareh’’. In 1935 he shot the first Armenian sound film ‘’Pepo’’ which was a great success not only in Armenia and Georgia but also in all the republics of the Soviet Union. Hrachya Nersisyan and Avet Avetisyan played the leading parts in this film. This film criticizes the social life and the authorities in Georgia during the reign of Russian zar. In fact corruption existed and flourished in Russia and other countries then. Hamo Beknazaryan shot the historical film ‘’Davit Bek’’ and the film ‘’Zangezur’’. We can’t say anything about the historical truth of the film ‘’Davit Bek’’ but as for the film ‘’Zangezur’’, it isn’t true to the historical facts.
Yuri Erznkyan
In 1957 Yuri Erznkyan shot the film “The first love song’’ which was a great success in the former Soviet Union. Arno Babajanyan’s songs gave the film special delight. Hrachya Nersisyan and Khoren Abrahamyan played the leading parts.
Henrik Malyan
Henrik Malyan got his first fame for shooting the film ‘’The Guys from the Army Band’’. It was in 1961. In 1963 he released a film about the famous Armenian clown Leonid Engibaryan - ‘’The Road to The Circus’’. In 1967 he shot the film ’’Triangle’’. With this film he brought something new to Armenian cinematography. The main thing in this film is not the plot but the human relationship based on true Christian love and respect among common people.
